The mountain railway over Semmering, also called “Ghega-Bahn”, is of great cultural and historical significance. It was built in 1854, which makes it the oldest mountain railway in Europe (it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998). Popular cities for day trips are, besides Wiener Neustadt and Baden, Styria’s capital Graz and the Austrian capital Vienna (you can get there by train – from Payerbach – or by car). The province Burgenland, with the second largest endorheic basin in Europe (Neusiedler See), is also a great destination for a day out!
